We love our donors, and it’s important to us that we take the time to recognize them and all the ways in which they’ve helped children in Haiti via their support of International Child Care.
Today, we are recognizing Sarah Hathcock, a long time ICC supporter and Race for Grace participant. She currently works as a pediatrician at the Salud Family Health Center, a clinic that focuses on low-income, medically underserved populations as well as the migrant and seasonal farmworker population in Colorado.
Sarah first became involved with International Child Care in 2002, when she visited Grace Children’s Hospital for the first time with her mother Jeannine, an ICC board member, and the rest of her family for a medical conference.
Sarah discovered her passion for sustainable health care while serving communities in Nicaragua, as part of the Peace Corps.
Since her first visit 19 years ago, Sarah has become an avid supporter of ICC and Grace Children’s Hospital by participating in several Race for Grace events. She was also able to return to Haiti for a second visit in 2014, when she would also have the unique opportunity to volunteer with the Integrated Community Health program. Volunteering with Grace Children’s Hospital ICH program, Sarah had the chance to visit the Jolitrou clinic. A clinic located north of Port-Au-Prince, nearly 14 miles from Cap-Haitien. With a UN safety escort, Sarah and other volunteers ventured across rough terrain, crossing several rivers to the remote village of Jolitrou where the volunteers and a translator, worked with patients in the rural clinic to provide care for their various ailments.
When asked about her favorite memories from these trips to Haiti, Sarah noted the strong community spirit that is fostered by the GCH staff with their education programs. And, she mentioned the special attention and care that each staff members provides to each child patient.
“It was incredibly moving to visit Grace Children’s Hospital for the first time and have the opportunity to spend some time with a group of mothers participating in a preventative care education program,” Sarah said. “The way the team at Grace brought the group together through music and interactive lessons was incredibly moving to witness.”
Sarah - thank you for your commitment to children and families in Haiti and your support of Grace Children’s Hospital!
